Places to Visit: The Grand Coulee
Grand Coulee Dam, built during the 1940s, is one of Washington State’s biggest attractions. Millions of visitors come here each year to see the dam in action. Many annual events are held here: In August there will be a “laser light show” outlining the dam’s history. The area also teems with golf courses and boating docks.
One of the most interesting natural features of the Coulee is the Lake Lenore Caves, made of volcanic rock eroded by water.This/tag helps explain it more. Prehistoric Indians may have lived or camped there. And Steamboat Lake State Park, where one can camp, is dominated by a huge column of basalt, and other high mountains that one can try and climb. But be sure not to litter or to remove any natural feature. You want to be able to come back next year and find looking just as attractive as before.
When the Grand Coulee was first being worked upon, Woody Guthrie sang about it in many of his songs, including “Biggest Thing That Man Has Ever Done,” “Way Up in That Northwest,” and “Big Grand Coulee Dam”" all available on his “Columbia River Collection.” He called Coulee “the mightiest thing built by the hands of a man.”
